The iPhone and iPad have incredible cameras. They take amazing videos, but did you know that iOS automatically compresses the video files (reduce quality) before it lets you upload to a website or transfer to another device? It does this because most of the time users don't need or want the highest quality videos. However, when you're uploading content to your Marvelous studio, you want to maximize the video quality!

Automatic Compression in action

If you watch closely when you try to upload a video directly from your iPhone's Photo Library, you'll see a little alert that says "Compressing Video...." at the bottom of the screen.

Uploading Without Automatic Compression

There are at least two methods to transfer files from your iPhone without automatic compression. If you have a macOS device, you can AirDrop from your iPhone to your MacBook and then upload the file using a web browser on your MacBook. The other method is to copy the video file from your Photo Library to your device's file system and then upload it from the file system, not the Photo Library.

Method 1 - AirDrop to a macOS device

  1. Go to your Photos app

  2. Click the video you want to upload

  3. Click the Share icon in the lower-left corner

  4. Click AirDrop

  5. Select your macOS device

  6. Go to macOS Device

  7. Login to Marvelous using your browser

  8. Click Add Media

  9. Select the file your just AirDropped (it may be in your Download's folder by default)

Method 2 - Copy from Photo Library to iPhone Filesystem

  1. Go to your Photos app

  2. Click the video you want to upload

  3. Click the Share icon in the lower-left corner

  4. Click Save to Files

  5. Choose a Folder on your iDevice (in this case Downloads)

6. Open Safari on your iPhone

7. Log in to Marvelous

8. Click Add Media

9. Choose Browse

10. Navigate to the folder you chose in Step 5

11. Choose the video and upload

Conclusion

As I mentioned, it takes a few extra steps, but your students will appreciate the higher quality videos! Please let us know if you find an easier way to transfer files from your iPhones without compression and we'll update this article.
